Powerfully-efficient: GM Two-Mode Hybrid GM's Two-Mode Hybrid system operates on engine power, electric power, or a combination of both. A sophisticated control module determines the amount of power required at a given moment and seamlessly selects the appropriate operating mode. The system uses regenerative braking to recapture energy that normally escapes as heat and stores it in an advanced battery pack so it can be used at a later time.
In Hybrid Mode 1, used mainly at low speeds with light loads, GM Two-Mode hybrids can operate using electric power alone, supplied by the on board 300-volt battery. Mode 1 can also use just engine power or a combination of electric and engine power. Fuel consumption is reduced in stop-and-go traffic as the engine operates on electric power alone when your vehicle is stopped, seamlessly restarting when you accelerate.
In Hybrid Mode 2, used as vehicle demands increase in both city and highway driving, electric power supplements the engine to improve fuel economy. Fuel consumption is reduced by providing some of the needed power from the battery allowing the 6L V8 engine (on the GMC Yukon and Escalade hybrids) to run more efficiently. GM's Active Fuel Management system also senses when you don't need all eight cylinders and smartly adjusts to run on four, giving you even better fuel economy.
The GM Hybrid System delivers a 10-20% improvement in fuel economy at an exceptional value. How? By employing a 36-volt nickel metal hydride battery paired with a 3kW electric motor working in conjunction with a 4-cylinder engine and automatic transmission. The system saves fuel by shutting the engine off whenever possible (typically at idle and during deceleration), capturing energy through regenerative braking and optimizing engine and transmission operation.
When your vehicle comes to a stop, the gas engine is shut off and your vehicle's accessories (stereo, lights, etc.) are powered by the hybrid battery, saving you fuel. What's more, it makes sure that when the light turns green and you take you foot off the brake pedal, the gas engine seamlessly re-starts and you have power on demand. The system also improves performance with electric assist during acceleration. During vehicle deceleration, gas to the engine is cut off, again saving you fuel.
The GM Hybrid System's
regenerative braking feature captures some of the energy naturally lost
during vehicle braking and coasting. It returns that energy to the
36-volt nickel metal hydride battery for future use powering the
vehicle. Regenerative braking helps boost fuel efficiency by charging
the battery.
